Frostrail System Requirements: Minimum and Recommended Specs

Sources checked
  • Official Frostrail Steam store page, system requirements panel (app 4540190) — checked Oct 26, 2026
  • Official Steam Early Access notes — expected ~1 year in Early Access, Q4 2026 start
  • Reported Third-party spec aggregator pages, which disagree with the store page (flagged below)

Quick Answer

Frostrail lists 16 GB RAM, a GeForce RTX 3060-class GPU and 25 GB of storage as its minimum, and 32 GB RAM with an RTX 4060-class GPU as recommended, on 64-bit Windows 10. That is a heavier floor than most co-op survival games ask for. If your PC is a laptop from before 2020 with 8 GB of RAM, plan on upgrading before Early Access rather than hoping the minimum is generous — the published minimum is the only number the developer has given us.

Confirmed Specs, Exactly as Listed

This is the store page verbatim, not an interpretation. No DirectX version and no "additional notes" field are published, so we don't fill those in.

What the Spec Sheet Actually Tells You

Spec lists are marketing documents as much as technical ones, but they leak design decisions. Three stand out.

1. The RAM floor is the real story. 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended is high for a four-player survival game. It fits the store description: a hand-built open world with procedural loot and spawns, a train you keep expanding with carriages and crafting stations, and co-op sessions where every player's scavenging stays in sync. Memory is what that kind of game spends. If you are building or buying for Frostrail, spend there first — one 16 GB stick in a four-slot board is the cheapest mistake to avoid.

2. The recommended CPU looks like a typo, and probably is. The minimum lists an i7-6700K; the recommended lists an i5-11400T. The 11400T is a 35 W low-power part — it is not a meaningful step up from a 6700K in a game that cares about sustained clocks, and it reads like a line copied from a template. Don't plan a build around it. Treat the minimum CPU as the real floor and pick any current six-core part above it; you will be far past the recommended line either way.

3. Storage is identical on both sides. 25 GB on both means the install size is fixed, not that the tiers need different space, and it's a small install by 2026 standards. We'd still put it on an SSD — the game streams an open world and loads you into dungeons — but that is our advice, not an official requirement.

Can Your PC Run It? A Blunt Reading

We don't publish frame-rate numbers we haven't measured ourselves, so this table is a judgement based on the published specs and the genre, not a benchmark.

Your buildReadingWhat to do
RTX 4060 / RX 7600 or better, 32 GB RAMComfortably above recommendedWishlist and wait for Early Access
RTX 3060 / RX 5600 XT, 16 GB RAMAt the minimum, not the targetExpect to drop settings; fine to buy, don't expect maxed visuals
GTX 1650 / integrated graphics, 8 GB RAMBelow minimumWait for benchmarks or a hardware upgrade — the demo is gone
Steam Deck, ROG Ally, other handheldsUnknownNo official support statement; don't buy on the assumption it runs

Co-op also raises the floor in ways a spec sheet can't show: with three players looting separate buildings while one drives, all of it has to stay resident. If you only just clear the minimum in solo, a full crew is where that will show. Our co-op roles guide covers splitting the work.

Ignore the Third-Party Spec Pages

Search for Frostrail requirements and you will hit sites listing an i5-8400, a GTX 1070 and 50 GB of storage. Those numbers are not on the Steam page, they contradict it line by line, and at least one of those pages sells laptops in the same breath. When a spec table disagrees with the store page, the store page wins. Specs also change: Early Access starts in Q4 2026 with roughly a year of development planned before 1.0, so treat this as a snapshot and re-check before buying hardware.

What We Haven't Confirmed

What we couldn't confirm
  • Frame rates at any resolution or preset — no official performance targets published, and we have not benchmarked a build
  • Whether the listed specs cover the Early Access build or only the Next Fest demo build
  • DirectX version, upscaler support (DLSS / FSR / XeSS) and any "additional notes" — the store page leaves these blank
  • Any Steam Deck verified status
  • Whether the recommended CPU line is an error — we read it as one, but FakeFish has not commented

Where to Go Next

If your PC clears the bar, the useful next step is understanding what you're actually installing: the Frostrail fact sheet covers the Eden Engine, the Penitent Gardeners and the Revenants, the train guide explains why charcoal decides whether your run survives, and the beginner's guide covers the first hour. The demo window closed on October 26, 2026 — see the demo guide for what it contained and what replaces it.
