What Is Frostrail? Everything We Know About the Game

If you've seen a giant steam train cutting through a frozen wasteland on your Steam feed lately, that's Frostrail — one of the most-wishlisted upcoming survival games of the year. This guide rounds up every confirmed fact about the frostrail game so you can decide whether to jump on the free demo or wait for Early Access.

The Basics: Developer, Publisher and Genre

Frostrail is a first-person co-op survival building FPS developed by FakeFish, the studio in Turku, Finland, best known for Barotrauma — a submarine survival game that has sold more than 3 million copies. The game is published by Shiro Unlimited, the publishing arm behind Shiro Games. On Steam the frostrail game is tagged Action, Adventure and Indie, and it launches in Early Access on Windows PC and Xbox on PC. A price has not been announced yet.

The Setting: The Void, the Emperor and the Endless Winter

The world of Frostrail didn't freeze by accident. The Emperor signed a pact with a mysterious entity known as the Void, and since then an endless winter has swallowed the land. You play as a survivor of the Penitent Gardeners, a faction trying to hold on to the last sparks of warmth and hope. Roaming the snow are the Revenants — undying, Lovecraftian creatures that hunt anything that still breathes. It's a bleak, oppressive backdrop that FakeFish clearly designed for tension rather than comfort.

The Gameplay Loop: Drive, Explore, Scavenge, Return

The heart of the frostrail game is the Eden Engine, a steam locomotive that doubles as your mobile base and sanctuary. A typical loop looks like this:

That push-your-luck rhythm — how far do you dare walk from the light? — is what sets the frostrail game apart from other survival builders.

Co-op: 1–4 Players

Frostrail supports 1–4 player online co-op, and you can play solo if you prefer. A crew can split up naturally: one player drives and keeps the boiler fed, while others loot buildings and watch for Revenants. Our co-op roles guide breaks down how to divide the work on a four-person crew.

The Free Demo: Steam Next Fest, October 19–26

A free demo is available on Steam during October Next Fest, October 19–26, 2026. The demo lets you drive the train, fight Revenants and explore 3 regions. Important: the demo ends October 26, so don't sit on it. Our Frostrail demo guide covers what's inside and how to make the most of your hours.

Heads up: the free frostrail demo closes on October 26, 2026 — the last day of Steam Next Fest. Grab it while it's live.

Release Date: Early Access in Q4 2026

Frostrail enters Early Access in Q4 2026 on Windows PC and Xbox on PC. Interest is enormous: the game passed 500,000 wishlists in September 2026. For everything we know about timing, pricing and platform questions, see our Early Access FAQ.

Testing History: From Playtest to Closed Beta

The road here has been steady and transparent:

Feedback from those tests directly shaped the game: FakeFish added a tutorial level, cross-level progression, levels with multiple exits, a larger tundra biome, and a train-defense mode where you clear obstacles and hold off attacks. That responsiveness bodes well for the Early Access roadmap.

Is the Frostrail Game Worth Watching?

If you liked the crew-tension of Barotrauma, the base-on-wheels fantasy of Snowpiercer, or survival games with a strong identity, Frostrail is about as promising as it gets: a proven studio, half a million wishlists, and a free demo you can try right now. Start with the demo, then read our beginner's guide before your first run aboard the Eden Engine.
