Frostrail Multiplayer: How Many Players, Crossplay & Playing With Friends
- Official Steam store page (single-player and online co-op listings)
- Official Publisher press material describing online co-op for up to four players
- Official Announcement for the April 2026 closed playtest, which used Steam Friend Invite
- Reported Press coverage of the October 19–26, 2026 Next Fest demo
Short answer: Frostrail is a one-to-four player online co-op game, and solo is fully supported. Co-op runs through Steam, with no split-screen, no LAN mode and no dedicated server hosting announced. Crossplay is not a live question yet, because only Windows PC has been announced. To play with friends you both need the game on Steam, one of you starts the session and the others accept a Steam invite — the April playtest used Steam's Friend Invite, and no different shipping invite system has been described since.
How Many Players Does Frostrail Support?
Four, and no more has been announced. The Steam store page lists single-player and online co-op, and the publisher's own material describes crews of up to four. Nothing in the official material describes a larger raid size, a second co-op mode, or a competitive versus mode — the Steam tags read PvE co-op, and the store description frames the fight as players against Revenants and the cold.
| Mode | Players | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | 1 | Confirmed on the store page |
| Online co-op | 2–4 | Confirmed in publisher material |
| Local / split-screen | — | Not listed by Steam, not announced |
| LAN | — | Not announced |
| PvP / versus | — | Not announced |
Two players is a real mode, not a degraded one. The work that four people split — throttle, boiler, looting, guarding — has to be folded into two people instead, which mostly changes how far you dare to roam from the train. We cover the split itself in the co-op roles guide.
Does Frostrail Have Crossplay?
Not yet a question with an answer, because there is only one platform. Frostrail arrives in Steam Early Access on Windows PC, targeted for Q4 2026. No PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or mobile version has been announced, and crossplay between platforms requires a second platform to exist first.
- Crossplay: not announced. Nothing to connect beyond Steam.
- Cross-progression / cross-save: not announced.
- Console ports: not announced. Studio comments have kept the door open for later, which is not the same as a date.
- Mac and Linux: not announced as supported at launch.
Practical takeaway: if your group is split across PC and a console, Frostrail cannot bring you together today. Everyone in the crew needs the Steam version on Windows. If ports appear around 1.0, crossplay becomes a separate decision the developers would have to make — the existence of a port would not automatically create it.
Do You Need a Dedicated Server to Play Frostrail?
No, and there is nothing to rent. Frostrail has no announced dedicated server support, no server browser and no hosting programme. Searches for "Frostrail server hosting" are currently landing on generic VPS ads for games that do have dedicated servers — that is not this game.
What the record actually shows:
- The Steam listing offers online co-op, not a server-based mode.
- The April 2026 closed playtest distributed access through Steam Friend Invite, where an invited player could invite one more friend.
- Neither the store page nor the publisher's announcements describe hosting a persistent world, paying for slots, or configuring a server.
That last point matters for how you plan a session: the crew plays together while the session is running, which is the normal shape of a Steam co-op game rather than a survival game with a 24/7 server. How saves behave across host changes has not been documented, so treat that as an open question until Early Access notes say otherwise.
How to Play Frostrail With Friends
- Both of you own the game on Steam. Early Access is the target window (Q4 2026). The free demo that ran October 19–26, 2026 has closed, and a return has not been announced.
- Add each other on Steam first. The co-op path the developers have actually used is Steam's friend system, and the store page lists online co-op rather than an in-game server list.
- One player starts the run and sends the invite. In the April playtest, the accepted player could then invite one further friend — a chain that works for filling a four-person crew.
- Accept the Steam invite and pick a job. There are no announced classes or hard role locks, so the split is whatever the crew agrees on: throttle, boiler, looting, guarding.
- Sort voice chat outside the game. Built-in voice chat has not been announced, so plan on Discord or Steam voice before you leave the station.
The one step we cannot write with confidence is the exact shipping invite screen, because the developers have not published it. If Early Access ships something different — a lobby list, an invite code, a session browser — that is not a contradiction of anything here; it is simply the part that was never announced.
What Actually Changes With Four Players
The train does not get bigger and the fuel does not get cheaper. What changes is who is available when something goes wrong: one person can keep the boiler fed while two loot a settlement and one watches the treeline. The failure mode of a full crew is everyone leaving at once — four people deep in a mine, nobody at the throttle, and a cold boiler when they get back. That is a coordination problem, not a difficulty setting, and it is why we keep pointing crews at the role split.
Two smaller consequences are worth knowing before your first group run. The gameplay-trailer copy warns that the roar of the engine draws Revenants in from the frozen wilds, which is a shared risk rather than a solo one — the driver's throttle is everybody's problem. And the developers describe ammunition as a luxury, so four people sharing one reserve need a little more trigger discipline than one person does.
Before You Invite Anyone
Read the beginner's guide first. The six habits in it map cleanly onto crew roles, and a friend who knows to return before overextending is worth more than a fourth gun. If your group is still deciding who does what, the train fuel guide explains the boiler well enough that your fireman can learn the job in one read, and the demo guide records what the October build actually contained if you are calibrating expectations for Early Access.
- The exact invite flow in the shipping Early Access build — only the April playtest method is documented
- Whether progress belongs to the host, the crew, or each player individually
- Built-in voice chat, matchmaking and any server browser — none announced
- Any plan for dedicated servers, console ports or crossplay — none announced
- Whether the four-player cap will change during Early Access — no statement either way
