Frostrail Steam Deck: Compatibility Status, Specs & What to Expect

Short answer: Frostrail has no Steam Deck rating, and that is not the same as failing one. As of November 6, 2026 Valve has published nothing for the game — no Verified, Playable or Unsupported badge, and the compatibility report Steam serves for the app comes back empty. The store page also lists Windows only, with no Linux build. So there are two honest answers to "does it run on Deck": nobody official has said it does, and nobody official has said it does not.

What we can do is lay out the evidence that exists — the published PC specs, the controller situation and what the small number of Deck owners who have tried it have reported — and separate that from guesswork.

What Is Frostrail's Steam Deck Status Right Now?

Unrated. Valve's compatibility programme assigns one of four labels, and Frostrail currently carries none of them. When a game has been through the review, Steam's store page shows a badge for it; Frostrail's page does not show one, and querying Steam's own compatibility endpoint for the app returns an empty result set rather than a category.

BadgeWhat Valve means by itFrostrail
VerifiedRuns well out of the box: controls, text size, launchers and system support all passNot awarded
PlayableRuns, but needs manual adjustment or has a documented limitationNot awarded
UnsupportedCurrently not functional on the deviceNot awarded
Unknown / unratedValve has not reviewed itCurrent state

The distinction matters because "no badge" gets misread as "won't run". Unrated means untested by Valve, not rejected by Valve. It cuts both ways: absence of a rating is no more proof that the game runs than it is proof that it doesn't.

One more caveat worth stating plainly, since the store data will change: a rating given now is not a rating for Early Access. Frostrail is still pre-release — the free demo window closed on October 26, 2026, and Early Access is targeted for Q4 2026. Valve re-checks games, and a build reviewed in one state can move between labels after an engine update, a launcher change or a Proton update. Anything written about Deck compatibility for this game has a short shelf life.

What the Published PC Specs Say About Deck Hardware

Frostrail does publish PC requirements on Steam, and they are the most concrete thing anyone can reason from. Reproduced as they appear on the store page:

MinimumRecommended
OSWindows 10, 64-bitWindows 10, 64-bit
CPUIntel i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5500Intel i5-11400T or AMD Ryzen 5
Memory16 GB RAM32 GB RAM
GPUGeForce RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 5600 XTGeForce RTX 4060 or Radeon RX 7600
Storage25 GB available25 GB available

Read that against Valve's own Deck numbers and the gap is obvious. The Deck's GPU is an RDNA 2 part with eight compute units sharing 16 GB of LPDDR5 with the rest of the system, driving a 1280 × 800 panel. The minimum Frostrail GPU is a discrete desktop RTX 3060, a card in an entirely different class, and the recommended memory figure is twice what the Deck has in total — not twice what is free, twice what exists.

Three things follow from that, and none of them is a verdict:

If you are weighing a PC purchase rather than a Deck, the system requirements page goes through these numbers line by line, including the recommended CPU entry that reads like a template error.

Controller Support Is the Other Open Question

This is the part people skip, and on Deck it decides more than frame rate does. Valve's Verified criteria require full controller support, prompts that match the Deck's buttons, and the on-screen keyboard appearing whenever text input is needed.

Frostrail's Steam listing currently tags Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op, Online Co-op, Steam Achievements and Family Sharing. It does not carry either the Full Controller Support or Partial Controller Support tag. That is not an announcement that the game can't be played with a pad — it means controller support has not been advertised on the store page, and a first-person shooter with train controls, inventory management and crafting menus is exactly the sort of interface where a missing gamepad layer becomes painful.

Treat this as the deciding unknown. A game can render beautifully on Deck and still be miserable if half its menus assume a mouse, and that is a design question the published material does not answer.

What Deck Owners Are Actually Reporting

ProtonDB aggregates player reports for Windows games running through Proton, and as of November 6, 2026 it lists Frostrail at an aggregate Gold tier from six reports, with the site's own confidence marked low and a best reported result of Platinum.

Read that carefully before you rely on it. Six reports is a sample, not a survey; the low confidence flag is ProtonDB saying so itself; and the reports date from a demo and beta period rather than a shipping build. It is player data, not a Valve assessment, and it should not be repeated as "Frostrail is Deck Verified" — those are different claims from different sources.

What the aggregate is genuinely useful for is direction: it suggests the game is not fundamentally broken under Proton, which is the failure mode that would make a Deck attempt pointless. It does not tell you the frame rate, and we are not going to invent one.

If You Want to Try It on a Deck Anyway

This is general Steam Deck procedure, not a Frostrail-specific recommendation — there is no official guidance for this game to pass on.

  1. Confirm you own it on Steam first. There is no Deck-specific version and no separate build; the Windows copy is the only copy. Early Access is targeted for Q4 2026, so today there is nothing on sale to install.
  2. Force a Proton version if it won't launch. Game page → gear icon → Properties → Compatibility → enable the Steam Play tool and pick a Proton build. This is the standard first move for an unrated Windows game, and it is what the ProtonDB reports above are describing.
  3. Set the resolution and cap the frame rate. The Quick Access menu handles both. Locking to a lower, steadier target is usually a better experience than an uncapped frame rate that swings.
  4. Play plugged in for your first session. A demanding first-person game is the worst case for battery, and you want the thermal headroom while you judge whether it is playable for you.
  5. Accept that a controller layout may be community-made. Without an advertised controller support tag, a community layout is the likely path, and you should check that inventory and crafting are reachable before you commit to a long run.

Should You Wait for a Rating?

If Deck is your only way to play, yes — wait for two pieces of information rather than one. A Valve badge answers the technical question; a controller support tag answers the ergonomic one, and the second is the one that decides whether you keep playing after the first hour.

If you have a desktop that meets the published specs, the Deck question is a nice-to-have rather than a blocker, and the more useful reading right now is what the game asks of you as a player. The beginner's guide covers the habits that keep a run alive, the train fuel guide explains the boiler that punishes inattention, and the multiplayer guide covers the co-op side — worth knowing before you assume a handheld session is a solo one. If you are still deciding whether to buy at all, the Early Access FAQ tracks what has and has not been announced.

What we couldn't confirm
  • Any Steam Deck rating for Frostrail — Valve has published none as of November 6, 2026
  • Frame rate, settings presets or performance targets on Deck or on PC generally — no official figures exist
  • Whether controller support will ship, and in what form — the store page carries no controller support tag
  • Whether a Linux build is planned — Steam lists Windows only
  • Whether the game will be re-reviewed by Valve before or after Early Access launches
  • Anything about the shipping build's performance: the demo closed October 26, 2026 and Early Access has no date beyond Q4 2026
